If you only buy one thing, buy a complete American mahjong set (look for 166 tiles with jokers) with racks and pushers included. Then grab the current National Mah Jongg League card. That’s all you actually need to play. Everything else on this list is comfort and cute.

Full honesty: I’m not an avid player (yet). I have a set, but I’m very much in the intrigued stage. I keep seeing people get into mahjong night and it sounds like so much fun, so I did the homework I’d want someone to do for me.
Here’s how I picked: I only kept listings with a strong review history, checked that each one ships in the US from a seller that matches the brand, and skipped anything that looked like a dropshipped copy of someone else’s photos. Prices move a lot on these, so I’ve given ranges rather than exact numbers. Check the current price on Amazon before you buy.

They all look the same in the thumbnails, so here’s what actually separates them.
An American mahjong set has jokers and racks. If the listing doesn’t say “American” and doesn’t mention jokers, keep scrolling. A Chinese or Hong Kong set is a different game.
Racks hold your tiles upright, and the pusher arm slides your row of tiles to the middle of the table. All-in-one racks (rack and pusher in one piece) are the easiest for beginners and pack flat.
This is mostly vibes. White tiles are classic and easy to read. Pink, green and patterned backs are cute and make it easier to tell two sets apart if your group plays with more than one.
Soft bags are lighter and easier to carry to a friend’s house. Hard cases protect the tiles better if you travel or store the set in a closet. Either is fine, so pick whichever you’ll actually carry.
The National Mah Jongg League card almost never comes with the set. Budget for it separately (more on that below).
American mahjong is played with 152 tiles, including 8 jokers. Most sets are sold as 166-tile sets, which means the 152 you play with plus spares. You’ll also want four racks with pushers. Most complete sets on Amazon land somewhere in the $50 to $75 range and include the tiles, racks, dice and a carrying case. Heirloom-style sets run closer to $175.
The one I’d send a beginner to. 166 white tiles, four all-in-one color racks with pushers, and a blue paisley carry bag. It’s also the most-reviewed set I found. It comes in a green tile version too, with a green case.
If the vibe matters (it does), this is the cute one: pink tiles, four clear racks with pushers and a blue-and-white chinoiserie bag.
The budget pick. White tiles, four all-in-one racks and a red bag, usually priced lower than the others here.
The splurge. Tiles with a patterned tan back and a beige soft case. This is the “I’m hosting every month now” set, or a big gift.

A mat keeps tiles from sliding and cuts the clacking noise, and it turns any kitchen table into a mahjong table. They usually come rolled with a storage tube.
Most sets include racks, so these are upgrades or replacements.
American mahjong runs on a card from the National Mah Jongg League, and a new one comes out every year. You can’t play the current hands without it, so buy it from the League’s own store or a reseller you trust. It comes in standard and large print.
This is the fun part. If it’s your first time hosting, here’s the short version: one table and four chairs, a mat, the set, a card for every player, and snacks people can eat with one hand so the tiles stay clean. Our no-oven appetizers work great for this.
You play with 152 tiles, including 8 jokers. Most sets on Amazon list 166 tiles because they include spare tiles too, so “166 tiles” in the title is a good sign you’re looking at an American set.
Yes, for American mahjong. The hands change every year, so you need the current card, and everyone at the table should be using the same one.
American mahjong is usually played with four. That’s why sets come with four racks.
Not really. Chinese sets usually come without jokers, and jokers are a big part of the American game. You’d also be missing the racks.
It depends on the table. Beginners tend to play slower while everyone reads the card, so plan a full evening for your first few nights.
Any complete American mahjong set with jokers and four racks and pushers. The GUSTARIA white tile set is the easy starting point.
If you’re just starting, don’t overthink the American mahjong set. Get a complete set, get the card, and get a mat if you play on a slippery table. Everything else is for fun. If you’re intrigued like me, this is everything you need to get started.
