How to Spot Deals on Everyday Essentials

Finding great deals on life’s necessities has become more important to busy moms than ever before. The cost of food for school lunches, new shoes for the kids, and that special dog chow for Fido quickly adds up, leaving you to think: “Will prices ever go down?”

While you can’t control retailer prices, there are a few simple tricks you can practice to save money.

Tip #1: Turn on Amazon Price Drop Notifications

With Amazon being the top online retailer in the world, it’s no surprise that you can find almost anything you need there. However, Amazon’s extensive inventory also makes it more difficult to find deals. Several browser extensions, including Keepa, now make it possible to watch for price drops on Amazon without requiring your constant attention. Most of these allow you to enter your preferred price point for an item, and then the app tracks it to watch for price changes. Alerts sent to your phone notify you when the cost of a favorite item has been reduced.

Tip #2: Visit the Amazon Outlet

One of the best-kept secrets for saving on everyday essentials is the Amazon Outlet. This hidden gem offers deep discounts on overstocked, clearance, and open-box items across a bunch of categories. Whether you’re looking for household staples, personal care products, or even groceries, the Amazon Outlet is a treasure trove of bargains that can significantly cut down your expenses. By regularly checking this section, you can find high-quality items at a fraction of their original price, allowing you to stock up on necessities without breaking the bank.

Tip #3: Use Old-Fashioned Coupons

Coupons

Yep, coupons are still a great way to save money on items from hundreds of retailers!

Many retailers, like Meijer and Kroger, have apps that make accessing and storing coupons quick and easy. Some stores even allow you to link your credit or debit card directly to their coupons, which are automatically applied whenever you make purchases with that card.

If you get your coupons in the mail or after checkout, don’t throw them away! Store them all in one location, and when making your grocery list, mark which items you have coupons for so you remember to use them.

Tip #4: Watch for Discount Deals

Some stores that sell large items, such as furniture, flooring, and car accessories, host discount events. During these events, items are often discounted due to overstocking, inventory clearing, or because they are being discontinued. Most of these stores have email newsletters you can sign up for that will alert you when these events are coming up.

Tip #5: Shop Grocery Store Case Lot Sales

Many grocery chains nationwide, like Whole Foods and Sam’s Club, will hold case lot sales events about three times a year. These events offer shoppers a discount on certain common items sold in bulk. For example, case lot sale shoppers could purchase an entire case of soup instead of just a few cans. Though these events are usually for food items, they can sometimes include other products for hygiene/beauty, pets, and children.

Tip #6: Hit the Dollar Store

Don’t limit yourself to just one store. Although shopping at one location is easier, it’s not always cost-effective. You could start your grocery shopping at ALDI and then end at Meijer, or buy as many items as possible from a place like the Dollar Store.

While you can’t get everything you need at a Dollar Store, it’s still an excellent place for buying everyday items, like hand and dish soap, paper plates, gift wrap, and toothpaste, at significantly reduced prices. You could even purchase toys and games for younger children and inexpensive health and beauty items for older teenagers.

Tip #7: Visit Simply Sales

Alyssa

Alyssa here! I'm a stay at home Mama of three and married to my Husband for almost 10 years now. Before having babies I worked in nursing homes in Occupational Therapy for over 7 years. Lately, with 3 kids under 5 it seems my only hobby is being a Mom (and online shopping lol) but when I make the time I enjoy hot yoga, scrapbooking, and reading. I’m a summer girl at heart and love being in the sunshine and near water. As a family we love to travel, go camping, and spend time at our property in Northern Michigan. My favorite place to unwind is a local coffee shop where I grab a cappuccino and catch up on all the latest deals and sales to share with you all! My style? Always leggings, sweaters, and when I get a night out I love jeans and cute bodysuit!
