It’s officially that time of year — Michigan’s great outdoors is calling! Whether you’re a seasoned trailer traveler or a tent-pitching weekend warrior, camping season is the perfect excuse to unplug, unwind, and soak up some serious nature vibes. But before you head out to chase sunsets and roast marshmallows, let’s talk gear. Here are 10 must-haves that’ll make your camping trip extra comfy, cozy, and chaos-free (mostly 😉) so you can have yourself a fun camping experience.
Michigan weather can be… dramatic to say the least. One minute it’s sunshine and shorts, the next it’s “Is that sleet?” So, make sure your tent has a solid rainfly and footprint, or that your trailer’s roof doesn’t leak like a forgotten juice box. Bonus points for fairy lights inside.
You’re out in nature, not roughing it like a pioneer. Bring a sleeping bag that matches the temperature (because Michigan nights get chilly), a cushy sleeping pad or air mattress, and don’t forget your pillow — trust us, your neck will thank you. Of course, if you are in a trailer a tempur-pedic mattress is the way to go! LOL!
A portable stove, a decent pan, utensils, and coffee setup are non-negotiable. Whether you’re flipping flapjacks at sunrise or heating up chili after a long hike, you’ll be glad you packed your camp chef game. For us camping has become a gourmet experience starting with espresso in the morning. The one thing I could no longer camp without is our Blackstone griddle.
Oh, and don’t forget the s’mores stuff. That’s basically a camping law.
When the sun dips below the trees, it gets real dark real fast. Bring headlamps, lanterns, or even some string lights to keep the good times glowing long after sunset.
My friend had this LED light attached to a hat, that made walking our dogs after dark so much easier! Holding your iPhone flash light and your dog while you try to find a poop in the grass makes for great comedy moments!
Without bug repellent or sunscreen there will be NO fun camping experience, trust me on that. Especially since mosquitoes are practically the state bird in Michigan. Stock up on bug spray (natural or DEET, your call), and don’t forget SPF for those midday kayak sessions or lakeside naps.
Folding chairs, heated rocking chairs, hammocks, or even a cozy blanket for stargazing — bring something to lounge in. Nothing beats relaxing by the fire with a drink in hand and zero responsibilities.
My favorite chair is a heated rocking chair with a pillow and of course a nice fleece blankie to sit by the fire. Camping doesn’t get any better than that!
From scraped knees to surprise headaches, a basic first-aid kit is a camping essential. Toss in some tweezers (hello, splinters), allergy meds, and after-bite cream for good measure. Add burn crème for Eveline, because she has been known to play around with the campfire poker…
Camping in Michigan = fashion roulette. Think layers: moisture-wicking tees, windbreakers, hoodies, flannels, rain jackets, and warm socks. Pro tip: pack an extra hoodie. Someone always forgets theirs.
Bring reusable water bottles, tumblers, jugs for refills, and a filtration system if you’re heading out on a hike off-grid. Hydrated campers are happy campers — especially when you’re hiking to that Instagram-worthy overlook.
We usually just enjoy the company of our fellow camp-group campers, but if you need something to keep you busy during the day or on rainy days bring a deck of cards, a cornhole set, the ukulele you never learned to play — whatever makes downtime delightful. Michigan has plenty of peace and quiet, but it’s always more fun with a few laughs with friends.
Camping in Michigan is all about embracing the great outdoors — from peaceful lakeshores to star-filled skies. With these 10 must-haves in your gear stash, you’ll be ready for whatever Mother Nature throws your way (yes, even those surprise rain showers!).
Whether you’re tenting it in the woods or relaxing in your trailer at a state park, a little preparation goes a long way toward making your camping adventure fun, safe, and unforgettable. So pack smart, stay cozy, and happy camping! 🏕✨
