Equipment You Need for Your Next Fall Family Adventure

Alyssa
A family of four hikes in a forest in the fall.

The crisp days of autumn are here, and there’s no better time to pack up the kiddos and enjoy an afternoon (or a weekend) hiking, camping, and enjoying the fresh crunch of a fallen leaf underfoot. Here’s the outdoor equipment we’re loving right now—let us know what camping and hiking products you’re loving, too!

#1 Big Agnes Kindercone 25 Sleeping Bag

  • Where to get it: REI
  • Recommended for ages: 2-10+
  • Price: $69.95

Trying to get any kid to fall and stay asleep while camping is usually like trying to nail Jell-O to a tree. You’ll finally be able to take a deep breath of fresh air once you see your little one sleeping soundly in the super-cozy Kindercone. With a temperature rating of 25 degrees Fahrenheit and a water-repellent coating, your child will be comfortable and dry all night long. And, shorter kids can use the built-in space adjuster stuff sack to shorten the length of the sleeping bag, allowing it to grow with them. This size works for kids up to 5 feet tall, and there are tons of options to meet the needs of your little one as they grow.

#2 Hydrapak Flux Collapsible Backpacking Water Bottle

Two Hydrapak water bottles, one collapsed and the other is expanded.

  • Where to get it: Amazon, Hydrapak
  • Recommended for all ages
  • Price: $25 (750 ml)

If you’ve ever been hiking with your kids and felt the leakage from a water bottle move from your backpack to your clothes, you’ll want to pick up one (or four) of these. If temperatures are still hot where you live, you might want to freeze your Hydrapak before you hit the trail. It’s totally safe to do so, as long as you don’t fill it completely and add a little bit of cold water when you take it out of the freezer. Pro tip: when you first receive your Hydrapak, fill it with water and a few tablespoons of citric acid to remove any plastic smell or taste upon first use.

#3 ENO DoubleNest Hammock

ENO's DoubleNest Hammock

With enough room to comfortably fit two adults, you and your little one(s) will love cozying up while you take in the sights and sounds of nature. The DoubleNest is lightweight and easy to set up, making it the perfect fit for kicking back and enjoying lunch while you’re on the trail, taking an afternoon snooze at your campsite, or curling up in front of the fire at the end of a long day of exploration. We love the super-softness of the hammock fabric, as well as the integrated pocket that allows the hammock to fold up into itself.

#4 Explorer’s Essentials Kit

  • Where to get it: GSI Outdoors
  • Recommended for ages 7+
  • Price: $52.95, currently on sale for $39.71

If your little adventurer is ready to learn more about the great outdoors, this preloaded essentials kit is the perfect place for them to get started. With 8x binoculars, a baseplate compass with a magnifier and ruler, a four-function whistle, and an LED flashlight, you’ll be able to encourage your kiddo to take the reins when it comes to navigating the trail or finding your reserved camping spot. The kit includes a protective carry pouch that your child can clip onto their belt loop or slip into a backpack.

#5 Zinyeme Portable Toilet

  • Where to get it: Amazon
  • Recommended for ages 2+
  • Price: $21.98, currently on sale for $20.98

It’s not the most glamorous addition to your must-have camping list, but believe us—when it’s 2 a.m. and your kiddo is shaking your shoulder telling you they have to go to the bathroom, you’ll be glad that you packed this simple-to-set-up, on-the-go potty. Complete with disposable plastic bags (think the ones you have for your dog, but for people), you’ll no longer have to find your shoes and flashlight to make the trip across the campsite to the sort-of-scary bathrooms in the middle of the night.

#6 Wishouse Walkie-Talkie 4 Pack

Four multi-colored walkie talkies

  • Recommended for ages 3+

When you venture outside the world of cell reception, you still want to have a way to keep tabs on your family. Whether you’re keeping in touch with your teen who went out for a morning nature walk or your elementary-age kiddos are checking in with each other from across the campsite, this family pack of walkie-talkies is a fun and simple way to keep everyone in the loop, no matter where you are.

Alyssa

Alyssa here! I'm a stay at home Mama of three and married to my Husband for almost 10 years now. Before having babies I worked in nursing homes in Occupational Therapy for over 7 years. Lately, with 3 kids under 5 it seems my only hobby is being a Mom (and online shopping lol) but when I make the time I enjoy hot yoga, scrapbooking, and reading. I’m a summer girl at heart and love being in the sunshine and near water. As a family we love to travel, go camping, and spend time at our property in Northern Michigan. My favorite place to unwind is a local coffee shop where I grab a cappuccino and catch up on all the latest deals and sales to share with you all! My style? Always leggings, sweaters, and when I get a night out I love jeans and cute bodysuit!
