Valentine’s Day can be a significant stressor for couples—do you go out on a date? Will you need to book anything? Will you find time to relax among all the other couples doing the same thing?

Sometimes, all that’s needed is just a relaxing day at home. It’s affordable, it’s convenient, and you can still show your partner how much you appreciate them.

If you’re looking to take it slow and save money this Valentine’s Day, check out some of our favorite at-home ideas that won’t break the bank.

1. Create a Romantic Dinner Experience

Enjoying a romantic dinner at home can be a fun and relaxing way to celebrate your love. Dress up your table with candles, flowers, and your best tableware. If there’s a restaurant the two of you adore, takeout can be a no-fuss way to enjoy a special and delicious meal together. Or, if you love cooking and want to bond in the kitchen, try making an old favorite dish or new recipe.

Adding fun cocktails or mocktails to your evening can also help amp up your Valentine’s Day. Check out these delicious booze-free mixed drinks, or give these festive cocktails a try.

2. Set Up a Movie Night With a Twist

Take your evening to the next level by creating a cozy, comfortable viewing area and picking a movie that’s special to both of you. Choose something nostalgic (like the movie you saw together on your first date), and curl up in a relaxing nook stocked with blankets, pillows, and fairy lights. If you feel so inclined, you could even pause the movie at key points to jot down quotes that remind you of each other.

Themed snacks can be a good addition to a movie night. Try making heart-shaped cookies, popcorn with seasonings, or ordering pizza from your favorite local spot.

3. Have a Spa Night

There’s nothing quite like a night at the spa, and it can be even better when you don’t have to leave your front door to get there. Creating an at-home spa night takes a bit of planning but can be well worth the effort.

First, choose the area where you’re going to set up your spa. A bathroom with a comfy bathtub can be a good fit, or you can use candles and soft music to transform your bedroom into an oasis. Then, set up comfy robes and soft slippers for you and your partner, choose face masks, foot soaks, or massage oils, and enjoy the rest of the night!

4. Exchange Heartfelt Letters

Do you enjoy expressing yourself through writing? If so, consider writing and/or exchanging heartfelt letters with your loved one. It can be a memorable, emotional experience that can strengthen the bond between you and your partner.

If you have time to write letters beforehand, perfect! If it makes more sense for the two of you to relax together while you write letters before presenting them to one another, fantastic! Whether you write your letters together or on your own, exchanging them will give you and your other half a keepsake that will be treasured for years to come.

5. Create a Love-Themed Game Night

Who doesn’t love a good game night? Games can be a great way to laugh, unplug, and reconnect.

One of our favorite at-home date games is The Ultimate Date Night Game, which features over 300 cards with unique activities and mini-games. You pick a card, and then you do what the card says.

You could also make a game about your relationship. For example, ask trivia questions about each other’s likes and dislikes, relationship milestones, hopes for the future, and more.

6. Get Creative With Art

Virtual painting classes can be a fun way to learn something new with your significant other in the comfort of your own home. You can enjoy a paint night on its own or pair a quick art lesson with dinner or a movie. If you can, plan ahead with an organization like Painting to Gogh—they’ll send you all of the supplies that you’ll need to enjoy your at-home paint night. Once you’ve finished your painting, you can proudly display it in your home, so it always serves as a memory of a fun date night.

7. Relax in the Backyard

If you’re able, snuggling around a campfire (or outdoor fireplace) can be a great way to create a memorable Valentine’s Day at home! Fill a thermos with hot cocoa, bring s’mores supplies, and take some time to reflect on all that you’ve accomplished in the past year as a couple. Enjoying time outdoors can be a great precursor to an at-home spa night, where you can warm up and relax after enjoying some time by the fire.

Alyssa

Alyssa here! I'm a stay at home Mama of three and married to my Husband for almost 10 years now. Before having babies I worked in nursing homes in Occupational Therapy for over 7 years. Lately, with 3 kids under 5 it seems my only hobby is being a Mom (and online shopping lol) but when I make the time I enjoy hot yoga, scrapbooking, and reading. I’m a summer girl at heart and love being in the sunshine and near water. As a family we love to travel, go camping, and spend time at our property in Northern Michigan. My favorite place to unwind is a local coffee shop where I grab a cappuccino and catch up on all the latest deals and sales to share with you all! My style? Always leggings, sweaters, and when I get a night out I love jeans and cute bodysuit!
