5 Family Michigan Adventures to Take Before School Starts

Samantha

It’s hard to believe summer is already in full swing! Before backpacks come out and the morning school routine returns, there’s still time to squeeze in one more family adventure.

One of my favorite things about living in Michigan is that you don’t have to travel far to make lasting memories. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just a fun day trip, these family-friendly destinations are perfect for enjoying the last few weeks of summer.

I’ve also included a few of my favorite travel essentials throughout the post—because having the right gear can make any family outing a little easier!

1. Spend the Day at Sleeping Bear Dunes

If your family has never visited Sleeping Bear Dunes, this is the year to do it! From climbing the massive sand dunes to relaxing on Lake Michigan’s beautiful beaches, there’s something for everyone.

Kids will love running through the sand, splashing in the water, and exploring the scenic trails. Don’t forget to stop at one of the overlooks—the views are absolutely breathtaking.

Don’t forget to pack:

  • Beach wagon
  • Beach towels
  • Cooler backpack
  • Refillable water bottles
  • Sand toys
  • Sunscreen
  • Portable fan

2. Explore Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island is truly one of Michigan’s most unique destinations. Since cars aren’t allowed, getting around by bike or horse-drawn carriage is part of the fun!

Spend the day riding bikes, shopping downtown, grabbing some famous fudge, and taking in the incredible waterfront views.

It’s one of those places that feels like stepping back in time, and kids love the adventure.

My must-haves for Mackinac Island:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Portable phone charger
  • Crossbody bag
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Lightweight backpack
  • Rain jacket (just in case!)

3. Cool Off at Michigan’s Adventure

Looking for a day full of excitement? Michigan’s Adventure combines thrilling rides with an awesome water park, making it perfect for families with kids of different ages.

Spend the morning riding roller coasters, then cool off in the lazy river or wave pool during the afternoon.

Things you’ll be glad you packed:

  • Waterproof phone pouch
  • Dry bag
  • Swimsuits
  • Cooling towels
  • Flip-flops
  • Extra change of clothes

4. Visit Tahquamenon Falls

If your family loves the outdoors, Tahquamenon Falls should definitely be on your Michigan bucket list.

The waterfalls are incredible, the trails are family-friendly, and there are plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife along the way.

It’s the perfect way to unplug and spend quality time together before school starts.

Outdoor adventure essentials:

  • Hiking backpack
  • Bug spray
  • First aid kit
  • Binoculars
  • Snacks
  • Water bottles

5. Spend the Day in Frankenmuth

Frankenmuth never disappoints! We try to do this every year as a day trip! Between shopping, delicious restaurants, riverboat rides, and Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, there’s enough to keep the whole family entertained.

Grab some ice cream, walk along the river, browse the unique shops, and make a full day of it.

It’s one of our favorite Michigan destinations because there’s something fun around every corner.

Don’t leave home without:

  • Portable stroller (if needed)
  • Neck fan
  • Reusable shopping bags
  • Snack bag
  • Portable charger
  • Camera

Make the Most of What’s Left of Summer

Before the homework, sports schedules, and early alarms begin again, take advantage of these Summer months to create memories with your family.

Whether it’s climbing the dunes, riding bikes on Mackinac Island, splashing at a water park, chasing waterfalls, or enjoying a day in Frankenmuth, these adventures are the moments your kids will remember long after summer ends!
